I can easily connect with these two lines from Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem, Ulysses. I love going out and doing things. I also enjoy the occasional lazy day of staying at home and reading all day, but there is nothing like a spontaneous adventure. Doing nothing – pausing – is such a bore. And, as Tennyson says, we don’t shine if we don’t do something, making discoveries and creating memories. Looking at another quote with a similar message, my favorite band, Coldplay, has a song titled “Adventure of a Lifetime” is which singer-songwriter Chris Martin sings, “Everything you want’s a dream away. Under this pressure, under this weight. We are diamonds taking shape.” Martin is simply repeating Walt Disney’s, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Martin also sings about us being diamonds when we adventure, similar to Tennyson saying someone who is doing nothing is someone not shining. Adventure awaits us all. We can do anything we dream of, and we will shine because of it.
